Dyslexia Resources

    Is it Dyslexia?

As someone who struggled learning to read, I wanted to make sure I did everything possible to avoid the same hardship for my daughter. After watching her struggle to remember letter sounds, writing letters backwards, and having an extremely hard time remembering sight words, I was fairly confident that she had dyslexia. We had her evaluated the summer after kindergarten and my suspicions were confirmed. We also found out that dyslexia is hereditary, so my struggle with reading was likely from dyslexia as well.

For those of you who may have the same suspicions, here is my favorite reference for dyslexia warning signs.

    Early Intervention

At the beginning of 1st grade, we starting having my daughter go to a dyslexia tutor twice a week, including through the summer. Because dyslexia is not something you outgrow and cannot be “cured”, I was prepared for her to always be behind. As long as she was making forward progress, I was very happy. Now, at the end of 5th grade, she has caught up to reading at grade level!! She has put in so much hard work and the fact that she has caught up (at least for now) is so inspiring to me. Getting intervention early can make a huge difference in the reading ability, confidence, and self-esteem of those with dyslexia.

    Not Alone

Sally Rippin is Australia’s highest-selling female author. She has written over 100 children’s books and this is her first book for adults. We have loved Sally and her books since my daughter was about 3 years old. Many of the books Sally has written have been from the perspective of, “what would my dyslexic son have liked to read?”. From her early readers to beginner chapter books, picture books, and older chapter series, I think we have read almost every single one of her books. And now I can add this book to my list! If you are looking for support, understanding, encouragement, practical tips, and resources while parenting a neurodivergent kiddo, this book is for you.
